Introduction to Issue 18

Speculative work is often regarded as a form of escapism. However, speculative work is strongest when it engages the world instead of offering shelter from it. When I suggested the theme of race for issue 18, I hoped to read submissions that dealt with the idea of race with both a creative and critical eye, and I was lucky enough to read a number of poems that exceeded my expectations. These poems are only a small glimpse at how speculative writers are engaging with relevant issues in diverse and exciting ways. I hope readers enjoy them as much as I do.
